ABC, time to go?

Friday, March 28th, 2008

last week’s report that businesses with ABC contracts provided free liquor and other perks for hundreds of ABC officials meeting at the Grove Park Inn last week.

We weren’t all agreed. The argument in favor of the current system is that it does more effectively regulate the availability of a product that, well, should be tightly regulated. There’s a limited number of outlets and limited hours of operation. Prices are higher than they might be in a more competitive environment, which helps discourage over-consumption. And profits provide revenue for local governments.

The opposing view is that liquor sales should be left to the private sector, as are sales of beer and wine, which can be regulated by statute. The government monopoly of the spirits trade is an anachronism left over from the post-prohibition era. Would it make sense for the state to take over the sale of tobacco products, pharmaceuticals or any other commodity? So why liquor? Why shouldn’t consumers benefit from the full range of products and competitive pricing that the private sector could offer? And, if ABC officials are potentially subject to the influence of special interests pouring drinks at fancy resorts, is the system any purer than private enterprise?

Can you help us sort this out with your opinion?

Republicans Live in a Parallel Universe

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Cross-Posted on The Democratic Daily:

Why is it not surprising that the White House is now embroiled in an email controversy over an entirely different set of email accounts run by the Republican National Committee for members of this Administration? A parallel email system to the authorized White House email system. The Republicans live in a Parallel Universe. They live in a world where they won the 2000 and 2004 elections. Where election fraud means people voting more than once rather than the thousands of voters suppressed in Florida, Ohio and elsewhere. They live in a world where the insurgents are in their “last throes

Guy Kawasaki to Launch Twitter/Digg Hybrid “Truemors”

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Mike Arrington at TechCrunch reports that Guy Kawasaki’s newest venture, Truemors, is a rumor reporting bulletin board that incorporates features of both Twitter and Digg. See a screenshot here, and look for a launch later this month.

Truemor is presently password protected, but Kawasaki posted on his blog last month that he is looking for “people in the flow of interesting and true rumors.” Tipsters are invited to call, text, post to the site or email rumors to post@truemors.com.

The point eludes me, as the dictionary definition of “rumor” includes: 2. gossip; hearsay: Don’t listen to rumor.
3. Archaic. a continuous, confused noise; clamor; din. Once a rumor is on the site, other users can leave comments and vote it up or down, like Digg. All new rumors are listed for people to review and vote on. Rumors with the most votes make it to a top list.

There is no visible business model, and I wonder if the Internet really needs more noise. I’d rather see a site that rewards contributors who confirm or disprove rumors in the manner of Snopes.com.

Nottingham Visit

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

Today I headed to Nottingham for a meeting with a supplier. To avoid the morning rush I took a pleasant walk up from Charing Cross to St Pancras. I’m amazed how close things in London are.

I got a Midland Mainline train up, in first class. It was so nice and quiet (and civilised!). I must travel first class more often. I got to Nottingham and remembering where the taxi rink was I was at the suppliers in minutes.

Now for a guy who used to get scared of going into shops on my own I was amazed to find I wasn’t the least bit worried about handling a meeting all by myself. Amazing how much more confident I am nowadays.

My meeting lasted all of 30 minutes, including small talk. It was over so quickly I had plenty of time to have lunch with Emily and her boss (on the suppliers account of course) before catching an early train back home. Managed to get a whole book read on the journey there and back. Result!

I was minding my own business reading on the DLR on the way back when three Asian women got on and stood next me, and then began to talk about my height and laugh about it in Hindi. HOW RUDE! I wanted to kick ‘em. 1) it’s rude to talk about my height anyway, I don’t go around to people and point out their little quirks and 2) really… talking in another language isn’t going to disguise what you are talking about if you make hand gestures and point at me… I’m tall not thick.

Whatever happened to manners? Oh and some Italians did the same thing this morning with “molto alto” mentioned a lot. Sheesh guys…

I’ve got a real thing against Italians this week (sorry to any Italian readers!) and a real thing for… Daniel Carter…

University of Missouri Doctor Lectures on Design

Friday, March 14th, 2008

It looks like CSC contributor Michael Egnor is not the only professor of medicine to stick his neck out for intelligent design and face severe personal attack. Dr. John Marshall of The University of Missouri–Columbia lectured this week on his own campus with the title “Intelligent Design: Is It Science or Religion?”
From both news and private reports, it sounds like he was verbally attacked in the Q&A session for his reasonable view that ID should be “part of the scientific discussion.” According to one news report:Rather than convince detractors that intelligent design was truth, Marshall repeatedly said he wanted the theory to become part of the scientific discussion, asking scientists to have tolerance toward his view. One attendee told me he was astounded by the level of immaturity and name-calling from professors hostile to Dr. Marshall’s position.

Earlier on April 6th Dr. Marshall debated chemistry professor Kenneth Schmitz at The University of Missouri–Kansas City as to whether or not ID is science.

Though he was mostly calling for civil dialogue and open discussion, Dr. Marshall said that “as a theory, I believe that intelligent design fits the evidence of biology better than Darwinian evolution.” As his example shows, this is a tough claim to make in today’s univeristy environment.

Meeting the Parents

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Meeting the parents is the unavoidable first step towards becoming a welcome member in your partner’s “private circle”. Meeting the folk’s is the best way to gain insight into how your beloved became the wonderful human being they are today (or figure out who’s weird body hair they inherited). There really isn’t anything to be afraid of when it comes to this important introduction, in fact some people really look forward to it. Wherever you stand on the matter, here is the low down on making a flawless first and lasting impression. No matter where the introduction takes place, be sure to be a little more dressed up than usual and keep a conservative image. Proper apparel really is one of the make or break factors in having the parent’s approval. Just because your intended has come to love you for yourself (mohawk/pro marijuana tee/safety pin through lip and all) doesn’t mean the parents will.Introduce yourself confidently and be the first to offer a compliment to help break the ice. Kissing butt does help as long as it’s delivered in a genuine way without being too elaborately effectuated. In conversation do try to be yourself, only a more refined and distilled version. Save all your neurosis and vulgarity for future family reunions. Know enough about the parents to inquire about their hobbies or accomplishments, they will probably know more about you then you do them. Having something to question and discuss helps them to feel more comfortable and more willing to open up to you.Have something to offer, as in bringing flowers or some wine as a warm gesture. Even if you’re meeting out for dinner, bring something. If you are the invited guest for a family dinner then offer to bring dessert and always send a thank you card a week after the dinner, or in the very least call to extend your gratitude. If you follow these easy guidelines you’re sure to become the son or daughter your future in-laws always wanted. If all else fails, remember that you can pick your friends but you can’t pick your in-laws.Fresh, fun and flirty advice on dating and relating. Take Your Future Online with Web Design School

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

by Ellen Foster
Web Design School Review Columnist

If you’ve been wondering how a career as a professional Web designer might fit in today’s media-saturated world, look no further than your local newspaper. Gone are the days when most Americans enjoyed their newspaper at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee. People want information at their fingertips—any time, anywhere. With the advent of hand-held Internet-ready devices, the World Wide Web is the newest place for Americans get their news.

Print Media Hops Online Thanks to the Work of Web Designers

Even major newspaper giants like Gannett are struggling to stay afloat amid the cultural rush toward online news. Chain newspapers across the country have begun to shift their focus from print media to the Web. Newspaper chains like Gannett, publisher of 90 papers, including USA Today, are doing everything they can to attract readers to their Web sites, providing a new demand for professional Web designers.

A newspaper’s Web site might include databases informing site visitors of local information—traffic reports or public school updates—Web designers with up to date skills are needed to make the site as user-friendly and appealing as possible.

Finding the Right Web Design School for You

Maybe you’ve been bitten by the news bug and you want to put your Web design skills to work in that industry. When it comes to finding your Web Design School program, you want to make sure your Web Design program has a specialty or concentration in the area of your interest. Look for a program that allows you to take plenty of courses in online news design.

THE GYLLENHAAL MASTERCLASSES

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Hello the literate, puggle fans and the Gyllenposessed. My name is Jake Gyllenhaal. You may remember me from such films as Donnie Darko, City Slickers and the documentary A Day In The Life Of A Fuck Machine.

If you do remember me from aforementioned works, you may have noticed how incredibly special am I. Don’t worry, I’ve noticed too and now I’m here to dispatch small nuggets of my Zeus-given-magic upon you, the less fortunate and generally tragic. Please pay careful attention to my first lesson: How To Make People Who Are Usually Attractive Look Less Attractive…

…Merely By Standing Next To Them. See! See, how I do it?! Look how beautiful I am here. Like I’m not even real. Like, come too close to me with a cigarette and I’ll start to melt. To be honest, this was quite a tough one as blondie was pretty statuesque but in the end, it always comes down to who has the best pecs. Me.

Thanks, tune in next week for more handy hints of how to rule. Obviously, this is all theory, please don’t expect it to translate into you actual life. Peace out, losers.
